Which Is Best? 1-Phase or 3-Phase Charging?
It is important to underline that although one-phase and three-phase charging units offer different properties, neither can be said to be better than the other. Some are more suited to certain applications than others but this will differ depending on how much energy you need to draw from the mains to charge your car up. Indeed, some sites are simply not suited to three-phase chargers which means that you will have to opt for a single-phase system. The main difference to note is that in a single-phase set-up, power will be supplied through a sole conductor whereas, in a three-phase system three conductors can be used.
Therefore, three-phase charger units are able to deliver more power to your car’s battery pack. What’s more, they can do so more quickly. However, a quicker and more powerful charging capacity doesn’t mean that three-phase units are superior to single-phase ones. If you only need to charge your plug-in hybrid overnight a few times a week, then the extra expense of a larger system might not be economical. Equally, not all electric car manufacturers make vehicles that are compatible with three-phase charging.
