At Hydra Installs, we are on hand to offer specific guidance on a range of EV charging equipment including whether one-phase or three-phase chargers will be suited to your property.
Which Is Best? 1-Phase or 3-Phase Charging?
It is important to underline that although one-phase and three-phase charging units offer different properties, neither can be said to be better than the other. Some are more suited to certain applications than others but this will differ depending on how much energy you need to draw from the mains to charge your car up. Indeed, some sites are simply not suited to three-phase chargers which means that you will have to opt for a single-phase system. The main difference to note is that in a single-phase set-up, power will be supplied through a sole conductor whereas, in a three-phase system three conductors can be used.
Therefore, three-phase charger units are able to deliver more power to your car’s battery pack. What’s more, they can do so more quickly. However, a quicker and more powerful charging capacity doesn’t mean that three-phase units are superior to single-phase ones. If you only need to charge your plug-in hybrid overnight a few times a week, then the extra expense of a larger system might not be economical. Equally, not all electric car manufacturers make vehicles that are compatible with three-phase charging. Consequently, among home EV charger installations at least, one-phase chargers are more common. We’ll be able to offer you specific guidance on the best option for you given your property’s wiring and your electrically powered motoring requirements.

1-Phase and 3-Phase EV Chargers For Homes and Businesses
We will be able to tell whether your home or business premises are suited to a three-phase EV charger installation by inspecting your fuse box or distribution board. When requesting a quotation from us, we usually ask for a photograph of your electrics which will often be all we need to assess whether a three-phase charger installation will be possible at your property. If it is and you own a compatible electric car, then we can put together a proposal for you that will allow for fast, three-phase charging, typically with a 22kW charger.
That said, we are very well-versed in fitting one-phase EV chargers at both homes and business premises. Whether you want just one wall box at the side of your driveway or inside your home’s garage, we will be able to supply you with a suitably rated charger. Equally, if you have several chargers you would like for your office’s car park or company showroom, we can supply floor or wall-mounted one-phase chargers that will get the job done effectively.

”I have to be honest and say that I had no idea about three and single-phase charging when I leased our first plug-in hybrid for our commercial fleet. Thanks to Hydra Installs's expertise, we have installed a couple of 7kW one-phase chargers at our operational headquarters and now use them to charge up a steadily growing number of hybrids. Not only was the installation professionally managed but it was much quicker than I had expected it to be.
